Our viols are Back.
A bass viol based on the same 1536 German painting as our other viols, this instrument has cherry sides and back with a spruce top, walnut neck, maple fingerboard, walnut tailpiece, maple bridge, boxwood nut and synthetic viola da gamba strings. It has a French polish finish and is currently tuned to an open D. It has a fixed soundpost and extensive bracing on the soundboard. A bow based on the ones in the painting is also available at additional cost as is a custom case. Available for immediate shipping.

A tenor viol based on a 1536 German painting of a viola da gamba consort, this instrument has a more modern construction than the other stringed instruments we sell. The sides and back are cherry, bent and made in pieces, with a flat spruced soundboard, cherry tailpiece, maple bridge and fingerboard, walnut neck and synthetic viola da gamba strings. It has a French polish finish and is currently tuned open G. (GDgdg’) The remaining strings from the set can be included and it can be retuned for more modern playing. It has a nonadjustable soundpost and extensive internal bracing of the soundboard. A simple custom hard case is available along with a bow based on the same picture, both at additional cost.
